My story

Pioneering excellence

LINE Architect was founded in 1990 in the midst of a major recession in Canada! With his blessing I left Harry Pellow's office in a journey of uncertainty and discovery. There was no clients but luckily Harry became my first client working on a couple of daycare projects. This was a quiet a transition for me who has worked mostly on large and complex masterplans, office towers and large shopping centres. Recession was in full swing and no one was constructing a new building because it was cheaper to buy an existing building. So, I had to diversify our services and provided interior design, and project malmanagement services for renovating and retrofitting existing buildings. It took 12 years until we got our first large project, a mixed-use complex of office towers, residential condos and commercial podium in downtown Toronto. When I first came to Canada as an immigrant architect armed with degrees for the University of Tennessee and Harvard, I got my first job with Ron Thom Office and them with Arthur Erickson, NORR and WZMH, and Pellow Architects. I learned many lessons but the real lessons always comes when you work in trenches. In the beginning, not even coop student were attracted to LINE but after wining several accolades for the Sir Sandford Fleming College, we had quiet a lot of interest from young architects who were even ready to volunteer in our office. The reason was because our book on Energy Efficiency in Architecture (sponsored by Enbridge and Union Gas) was published in 1998 As a follow up I made presentation in conferences in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Riyadh and Singapore. My most successful venture was forming a Committee for the Toronto Society of Architect called Friends of Sustainable Architect (FSA@TSA) in 2004 organizing lectures and tours, and the first ever exhibition of Sustainable Architecture in Toronto. We had 17 volunteers who helped with the traveling exhibition of over 50 projects designed by Toronto architects with sustainable design features in 2004 and 2005. I was also been invited to showcase and speak in Construct Canada, IIDEX, Canada Energy Conference, and others. Christopher Hume wrote a 2-page article in the Toronto Star entitled 'Beauty on Budget" including our Fleming College project. More projects were showcased in various journals and in a book entitled: Canada Innovates.
